Recently, we introduced a geotagging feature in WordPress for iPhone that allows our users to geotag posts with the push of a button. While the response we received was overwhelmingly positive, many of our users requested a plugin that would allow them to display the geotagged data on their self-hosted WordPress sites.
Well friends, that day has come! We’re very happy to announce that the Geolocation plugin is now available for self-hosted WordPress sites, and can be downloaded at the WordPress.org plugin directory or through your WordPress dashboard: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/geolocation/
The plugin adds a subtle but powerful addition to posts you’ve geotagged using WordPress for iPhone: a link appears inside your post with a short description of the location where the post was tagged. When your users hover over the link, an interactive map appears allowing them to view the location as a pin on the map.
And if you’ve got a post that you forgot to geotag using WordPress for iPhone, we’ve got you covered there as well. Just open up the Edit Post page, and you’ll be able to easily add geo information using the Geolocation panel. All you’ve got to do is put in an address and hit Load.
We think this new plugin serves as a nice companion to WordPress for iPhone as well as the other geo-enabled mobile app projects. Check it out and let us know what you think!
